Default Using Petrol to start a Diesel engine

Would it be ok to use a little petrol in the breather in order to get my diesel engine started?

    The short answer is no!

Diesel engines work in a different manner to petrol engines and require the lubricant in Diesel to keep them running smoothly, at the very least you will probably damage your fuel pump and injection system and at worst potentially ruin the engine.
If you are having trouble getting a Diesel to start of its own accord then probably it might be in need of a service or if it is being used in a cooler climate then maybe larger preheaters are required or in exceptional conditions maybe a proprietory 'easy start' gas may be used.

Above all, you should consult the manufacturers handbook. If it says you

Given enough heat, a good fuel supply and ensuing the engine is cranking, you should never need to use anything on a bigger engine.

Focus on the basics. Fuel and Crank.

Engine heaters are certainly useful in low tempuratures.
