Internal glazing of the engine is a problem caused by low load, as is carbon build up.
You may also expereince this along with a symptom of oil leaking from the exhaust, turbo or manifold.

When a diesel engine is under low load, the pressure in the cylinders falls. This causes a poor sealing of the piston ring, as it relys on the pressure. Low pressure in the cylinder can cause poor combustion and low cylinder tempuratures. Poor combustion leads to unburnt diesel and this clogs the piston rings, wich causes the sealing efficeiency to fall even more and makes the problem again worse.

Glazing occurs when hot combustion gases blow past the poorly-sealing piston rings. This causes lubricating oil on the cylinder walls to 'flash burn', creating an hard glaze which smooths the bore and removes the "honing marks" machined into the bore surface which are there to hold oil and return it to the crankcase by the scraper piston ring.

    Does that help?
How long has it been running for at low load?

The best thing you can do it run it at standby rating and see if the unit improves.
I would try and run it at full load for the whole day and see if it helps.

What size of generator is it? Did you try and run it on full load? Did it not solve the problem?
    How old is it?

Chinese generators often do not last like others I am afraid to say.
