Fuel pump 1104/1106
We have 30 engines 1104 and 6 engines 1106. Engines are build in a generator.
We have a lot of problems with the electronic fuel pump/ filter. We have allready replace more than 50 pumps.
What can be the problem?

Bertbj40,
Hi hope your OK!
Who built the generators? Are they old or new? How long do the fuel pumps take to go?
Do the generators run from a basetank or a seperate bowser or bulk fuel tank elsewhere?
If you let me know I will make some suggestions for you.

The generators are build in a company in the Netherlands.
Some fuel pumps runs only 200 hours, others runs 2000 hours.
Basetank under the generator.
Pumps breaks only when the engine starts up. Not when the engine is running.

The generators are made in the Netherlands.
The fuel tank is under the generator.
We have the most problems by the start-up of the generator

Bert,
What size pipeis there between the fuel tank and the pump?
These electric lift pumps have had many problems over the years since they were introduced.
IIRC perkins have been through a number of suppliers.
Most of the problems with them happened when the fuel restiction was too large, which was usually caused by people either not making them correctly in the first place with pipe that was too small, or using a remote fuel tank. The pump didnt like the remote fuel tank, many companies using the remote fuel tank do some sort of mod, but that does not appear to be your problem from what you say.
Have you recently fitted any fuel pumps that have failed, or have all the fuel pumps been the original ones? How old are the engines?
-
The inside size of the pipe is 5 mm.
The height between the pump and the bottom of the fuel tank is 1,5 m
The engines are 1,5 year old.
We have also the same problem with replaced pumps.

Replacement pumps
Bert,
Personally I think that pipe is too small. Increase it to 3/8" minimum, roughly 10mm pipe. I would probably even go bigger on the 1106.
you will need to increase the size of the suction pipe in the tank and the fitting also. I think that should help to solve this problem.
If you think we've helped you, we'd obviously love the oppertunity to quote you for your replacement fuel pumps. I hope not only will that solve the problem, but we might be able to save you some money on them!
You can contact our spares department on sales@wellandpower.net and we would of course be happy to quote these items for you.
Are the tanks you use plastic or steel at the moment?
-
By my estimates that pipe is too small also.
If you are going to the trouble of altering the pipework, it would probably be wise to go to 10mm on the 1104 and bigger maybe 12mm on the 1106.
As WellandPower says, dont forget to adjust the pipe fitting on the tanks and pipe going into the tank itself.

How many generators have you got to sort out bertbj?
-
We have 36 generators with fuel pipes that are too small.
It's a steel tank.
