Question Why do you need the serial number?

Why when i want perkins spares does everyone always want the serial number.

Surely the model of engine should be enough!?

A lot of information is contained in that simple number. We are primarily concerned with the number so that we can properly determine the configuration of your engine as it was originally manufactured. This helps us to provide you with the correct engine if you are purchasing an entire unit, and to look up the correct parts if you are in the process of repairing or maintaining your engine.
Engine manufacturers are no longer making an "engine" and expecting equipment manufacturers to "fit" it into their equipment. Both are working together to engineer a "power plant" for a specific task to perform to its best ability. With so many specifications for engines being manufactured, we need your help in providing us with this number so that we can provide you with the correct part the first time!
