yanmar l100
Hi,I've a generator powered by a yanmar l100 engine recently it seized i thought big end had gone again just stripped it and the cam came out with front cover big end is fine cam is stuck in cover as i remember last time i removed cover cam stayed in engine any thoughts on how to remove it please help

Hi, It sounds like this is probably the cause of your seizing problem. The end of the cam may have seized in its journal housing which is why its come out with the cover. This is fairly unusual and would only normally happen if the oil way to the cam end became blocked or the engine ran low on oil. There is no magic way to seperate them you will just have to soke the end in penertrating oil and gently lever them a part (protecting the delicate alloy of the case with some wood or similar) If they are really seized solid then chances are they will both require replacement anyway as unless both surfaces are very smooth they will seize again fairly soon and you cannot really grind them as then they will be a loose fit which is no good either. Has this engine been seized before? if so the damgage may have started then with the oil starvation but took longer to take effect on the cam as its under less pressure than the big ends on the crank.
