PERKINS 1103C Engine Valve Clearances
Hi All,
First post on this forum ....
Perkins 1103C 3 cylinder diesel engine
Just bought a Genset generator with internal fire damage and engine knocking
Reason... Exhaust has been firing through air filter as its bent a push rod and chipped the rocker and bounced out
I have straightened the rod, and refitted it and set up the valve clearance roughly
It now starts ok and runs
I can buy a new rod through Seddons but they cannot tell me technical data
I have worked out the firing order as 1,2,3
Can anyone tell me the correct way to set valve clearances ? and settings
I assume its going to be engine on TDC or no1 on the rock and adjust certain valves then rotate the engine again 360 ?
I tried a few ways but couldnt work it out ?
As I dont know the correct clearnce I assume the 20 thou inlet and 38- 40 thou exhaust is excessive
Many thanks in advance for help ?

The best idea would be to buy a workshop manual for this unit. It will have all the details in it for your valve clearances and will no doubt be useful in the future for similar things.
If you email and engine serial number to sales@wellandpower.net they could give you a price for the rod and also a manual - that way you will have everythign you need for this engine.

Hi there
The Valve clearance for these engines is 8 thou inlet and 18 thou exhaust so your settings are a little wide!!
The proceedure for adjusting is as follows:
Rotate the crank clockwise as viewed from the front when No 1 cyl inlet valve is open and the exhaust is not quite shut then measure No2 inlet and No 3 exhaust. Then rotate until No 2 inlet is open and No 2 exhaust is not completely closed then measure No 3 inlet and No 1 exhaust. Then rotate crank until No 3 inlet is open and exhaust is not quite shut and measure No 1 inlet and No 2 exhaust.
This should set you up correctly

Hi Gary,
Brilliant, mate I just couldnt work it out ...
New rods fitted and it works a treat ...
Going to sell this on... and hopefully turn a profit on it
Guy is selling another one of the same... but fuel pump wont inject ? and the hours are high 27,000 been on a site since 2002 running 24/7 ish
asked at a local diesel injection centre and he quoted me 1400 quid for full recon with injectors calibrated at the worst
just I dont think I will find a used one on ebay ? probably buy an engine for that mind you I probably would buy the genny for less ??
dont want to play, and find its a dodgey wire or sender
Cheers

No problem!
Could be several things with the other engine, one thing to check first would be the electric plastic lift pump which feeds the injection pump as these are notoriously unreliable and fairly cheap to replace, a complete new injection pump would be anywhere from £750 - £1200 depending on the version of 1103 engine it is so would probably be prohibatively expensive.
You might also want to check the fuel solenoid on the bottom of most of these pumps as well which could also be causing this sort of problem if it has died.
