    Hi all,

What is a non-linear load? How should I size my generator to take account of these and what will be the effect if I do not?

Some items that normally represent a non linear load, due to the fact they incorporate a switched mode power supply:

    personal or notebook computers
    laser printers
    fax machines
    telephone systems
    stereos
    radios
    TVs
adjustable speed drives and variable frequency drives
    battery chargers
    UPS,
and any other equipment powered by switched-mode power supply (SMPS)!

What should you do about sizing, you should allow a minimum of 20% additional in your Alternator rating in order to compensate - depending on the other loads you might need more.
