The most common question, answered!

[h=1]“The Generator is just switching off”[/h]Generators do not “just switch off”. You can establish the cause if you are methodical.
Firstly, check the control panel for any indication of why the fault is being caused.
If the shutdown occurs before 10 seconds of running:
  • Check the sets running speed / frequency is not overshooting.
  • Check the voltage is not overshooting.
  • The control module will normally display a warning indicating the fault.
If the shutdown occurs 10 seconds from start:
  • The control module “safety on” timer has just started, check the engine oil, water level and alternator voltage.
  • Then check the readings on the control panel and action these as required.
  • The control module will normally display a warning indicating the fault.
If the set shuts down after 10 seconds:
  • Try RUNNING THE SET OFF LOAD, (i.e. Circuit Breaker Open). If the set does not exhibit the same issue, it is a LOAD problem. (Load fault, Load Too High).
  • The control module will normally give an indication of the error.
  • In all other instance, something else is causing the set to shut down. Depending on the controller a under-speed or under frequency shutdown can also demonstrate an external fault (as this is the first fault detected when the “something else” causes shutdown. “Something” else is normally:
    • Low Fuel / Fuel line blockage / Engine not getting fuel
    • Generator Load too high OR Generator Step Load too high.
    • A wiring fault in the load, causing excessive Harmonic Distortion.
    • The ECU is shutting the set down and not reporting the fault to the generator controller because:
      • The generator controller does not interface with the ECU and therefore is not able to read these faults.
      • The generator controller does not understand the fault code given and cannot display it.
      • Note that not all fault codes are displayed in text, some codes only the code itself will be displayed and these need to be referred to the engine manufacturer.
Important Notes:
In our extensive experience, it is essential to check the exact timings of the shutdowns, as they dramatically assist with fault finding.
Older models of electronic engine, such as the Perkins 1306 Series have ECU’s that have their own interface. Please refer to the specific guides for reading fault codes.
