The auxiliary winding in a Mecc Alte alternator, called MAUX (MeccAlte auxiliary) is a method used to assist in motor starting applications in place of a PMG (permanent magnet generator).

Both systems provide an independent power supply to the AVR, instead of relying on the main stator winding. By using an independent power supply, the voltage is much more stable when starting motors and non-linear loads, allowing the AVR to perform better and keep the voltage from dipping as much as it would do if it was powered directly.
