    If you want to seperatly excite an alternator (presumably because you have a low, but balanced (within 2V) main stator voltage), then you should excite the stator using a 12V battery.

    Connect the battery to the exciter output cables, and see if you have now got he correct voltage. if you have then the AVR is probably faulty, or the AVR power has failed (MAUX failure?)
