Welland - Company Profile

Welland has been around for almost 80 years. Prior to that the Farrow family sold a selection of used and new pumps, mostly into their local market. Based in a farming area, which is below sea level, the 1920's post war period provided significant business. In 1950, as Welland Engineering was incorporated. The company undertook various engineering projects, based around irrigation not only in the UK, but also overseas. In the 1970's diesel generators were added to the product range and from 1990 formed the majority of the output.

1920's Trading

The Farrow Family started trading in the 1920's. Mostly selling used army surplus equipment form the end of the World War. The equipment was very popular in a low lying farming area. High quality products and support became hallmarks of the family business.

Welland Engineering Company Formation
Company Formation

In 1950 the company was incorporated. Building on years of success and needing to expand overseas it was an essential step. The company was sucessfull and was purchased in the early 1970's by another Farrow - William Russell Pickworth Farrow.

Global Pumping

In the years after incorporation the company became a global leader in the irrigation of agriculture around the world. The company supplied blue chip clients such as Tate and Lyle with pumping solutions. This activity set a global outlook for the business.

A new Product

As the world continued to become more and more dependant on electric power, the company introduced a range of diesel generators, powered by Lister and Perkins engines. Over the next 20 years, generators formed a larger and larger part of the business.

Welland Moving to Water Lane
The First Move

Welland initially purchased a site in Water Lane, Spalding in the mid 70's, moving from the original site about 3 miles away. This move expanded the available covered space and allowed the business to expand generators, while trying to maintain the pumping business.

Welland Move to Holbeach
Holbeach Relocation

Following the tragic loss of William Russell Pickworth Farrow, the business was split between his four children. The business was then purcahsed by Edward John russell Farrow from the other family members. The land however was excluded and this forced a move to an alternative site in Holbeach.

The late 1990's and 2000's was a difficult time for the business. Like many companies in the UK, a combination of economic woes and a strong pound made some export markets impossible to access. Some businesses in the sector enjoyed goverment assistance due to their location.
